Telescope

Telescopes are used in astronomy to observe deep-sky objects and popular in astrophotography for capturing amazing celestial objects.

What is a Telescope?

Telescopes are mainly designed with lenses or mirrors and sometimes with both to gather the light of an object and create a magnified image by reflecting or refracting the light. Astronomers use different types of telescopes to enjoy the best view of the night sky with the most detailed images of celestial stars and planets.

Telescopes will help you enjoy the far away objects in the brightest view. You will just require some simple moves with your hands.

If photography is your hobby, grab a telescope with necessary equipment and go out to discover the unseen.

How does a Telescope Work?

A telescope works with mirrors or lenses to create an image by gathering the ray of light coming from a distant object. First, it focuses the object and then reflects or refracts the light. The magnification of an image occurs by an eyepiece used with a telescope where you will keep your eyes. A reflecting telescope works by reflecting the light with a primary and a secondary mirror. A refracting telescope works by refracting the light with lenses. And a catadioptric telescope works by both reflection and refraction.

Types of Telescopes

All telescopes are not available with the same features. They vary in quality and design. You will find three main types of telescopes on the market. Refractors, reflectors, and compound or catadioptric. You will also find some major differences among them. This is because each type of telescope is designed in different way and works in different method. Refractors use lenses, reflectors use mirrors and catadioptric telescopes use both lenses and mirrors.

Refracting Telescopes

A refracting telescope is designed with two lenses and an eyepiece to form the clear magnified images of the faraway objects of the deep sky. Astronomers use refracting telescopes to have the closest view skipping the process of collimation. A refracting telescope works by focusing and bending the light with the lenses and then magnifies it by the eyepiece.

Reflecting Telescopes

A reflecting telescope is an optical tool designed by two mirrors to focus the light by bending and reflecting it. The primary mirror reflects the light and passes to the secondary mirror where the light is reflected again. Then it reaches the eyepiece located at the back of the scope. The eyepiece magnifies the image and shows it to us.

Catadioptric Telescopes

Catadioptric telescopes combine both the lenses and the mirrors to get the optical benefits providing refracting and reflecting qualities. And this convenient design made them easier to carry. Along with the refractive and reflective optics, there is a corrector plate at the front of the telescope that folds the light paths and reduces chromatic aberration using specifically shaped optics.

How to Buy a Telescope?

Before buying a telescope, you need to consider some specific things as buying guides. First, check the aperture of the scope because the aperture will give you the resolution idea of the formed image. Learn the building equipment as well as the optical quality. Building equipment will tell you what type your mount is and how the scope is built. Optical quality will show you how sharp images your telescope will offer.

How to Use a Telescope?

If you can adjust the equipment properly, using a telescope will be easy for you. So first, set up your scope, keep your eye on the eyepiece and point the scope tube towards the targeted object. If still, you won’t be able to observe the object, move your scope to adjust by the control knobs located at the mount. And thus you can easily use a telescope to observe the night sky.
